Sicily water crisis blamed on administrative and infrastructural failures, Court of Auditors reports

Italy's Court of Auditors examined the severe water shortage in Sicily and concluded that the problem cannot be ascribed solely to climate change. The report points to persistent administrative, managerial and infrastructural shortcomings. Roughly half of the water supplied through regional networks is lost, and many of the 45 dams operate with restrictions due to missing safety tests, inadequate maintenance and incomplete seismic checks.

Despite an €800 million program announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and significant European and national funds, the Court found chronic delays in planning, design and execution of projects. Weaknesses in regional and intermediate authorities have left the island with a water demand of 1.16 billion cubic metres per year unmet, highlighting the strategic importance of reliable water resources for Sicily's wellbeing.
