Sicily water crisis deepens as ANAFePC files complaints to nine prosecutors and three ministries

The civil association ANAFePC has lodged a detailed complaint with the public prosecutors of all nine Sicilian provinces, also involving Italy’s Ministries of the Environment, Infrastructure and Health. The filing highlights chronic water shortages that leave many municipalities without supply for 15‑20 days, forcing households to rely on private tankers and pay a “double tariff” for public and private water.

The association points to long‑standing structural problems, including abandoned dam projects at Blufi and Pietrarossa that have been stalled for over three decades despite their strategic capacity to feed multiple provinces. ANAFePC urges magistrates and ministries to investigate possible contractual irregularities, omissions and administrative negligence that have left the island’s water system in a state of chronic failure.
