Sicily water crisis: Tanker services resume as Trapani bolsters emergency response
Water tanker services in Sicily have resumed following a month-long strike in the Agrigento province. The stoppage, which exacerbated the summer water crisis, was triggered by disputes over operational rules introduced by the manager Aica. Aica has since provided clarifications regarding service management and reimbursement procedures. Under the new directives, priority water supply must be provided via the public aqueduct; however, users can request private tanker deliveries and seek reimbursement if service interruptions are caused by sudden malfunctions, provided they are registered users and submit necessary certifications.
In Trapani, local authorities are intensifying efforts to manage the ongoing water emergency. Mayor Giacomo Tranchida has issued an ordinance to bolster the Municipal Operations Center (Coc) by integrating organized Civil Protection volunteers. These volunteers will assist with receiving, registering, and managing water supply requests, though decision-making authority regarding priorities and delivery scheduling remains strictly with the municipality. A dedicated telephone number for booking tankers is being introduced to streamline the process.
