Sicily water shortages spark protests in Messina and Nicolosi
In the northern part of the Messina district, residents report intermittent water supply, with some homes left without water for days while beach showers continue to run. Councilor Alessandro Russo of the Democratic Party raised the issue at the municipal council, questioning Mayor Federico Basile and the regional water authority Amam about why beach facilities receive water while households do not, and called for a reallocation of resources to domestic supply.
In the town of Nicolosi in the province of Catania, inhabitants have been without tap water for up to a month. Broken pumps and failures at the regional water company Acoset have left households relying on water tanks. Mayor Angelo Pulvirenti said the municipality has sent formal notices to Acoset, contacted the prefecture and is seeking alternative supply, while Acoset director‑general Antonio Coniglio is reportedly being consulted daily.
