Southern Italy weather alert: orange warnings for Puglia and Basilicata

A significant weather disturbance caused by a low-pressure area moving from the Balkans has triggered orange weather alerts for Puglia and Basilicata, with yellow alerts issued for Calabria, Campania, Molise, Abruzzo, and Sicily.

In Puglia, municipalities including Lecce, Brindisi, Fasano, and Cerignola have implemented precautionary measures such as closing schools, parks, and cemeteries. Local authorities have also suspended markets and activated municipal operational centers to monitor hydrogeological and hydraulic risks. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds or gales are expected, with potential flooding of the Lato river and coastal storm surges.

In Basilicata, the orange alert warns of persistent precipitation and intense wind. Other regions, including Calabria and Sicily, face risks of heavy rain, hail, and electrical activity. In Sicily, the Agneta storm has already caused localized damage in Palermo, including uprooted trees and flooding. Authorities across the affected southern regions have advised citizens to limit non-essential travel and avoid high-risk areas like underpasses and wooded zones.
