Sicily wildfire compensation dispute

Regional deputy Santo Primavera has filed an inquiry requesting that the Sicilian regional government extend financial compensation for agricultural businesses affected by wildfires. Currently, the public notice for reporting damages only covers fires occurring between June 21 and August 6, 2026, despite the official regional fire prevention campaign spanning from May 15 to October 31.

Primavera argues that the current time restriction creates an unfair disparity for businesses that suffered losses just outside this window. Data from Legambiente Sicilia, utilizing EFFIS-Copernicus information, indicates that over 24,400 hectares have been destroyed by fires in Sicily since the beginning of the year through late July. The situation has been exacerbated by extreme heatwaves across the island.

In Palermo, weather alerts have also been issued, including a red alert for upcoming heatwaves.
