Sicily's Costanza I ferry sparks debate over docking and costs

The deployment of the Costanza I, Sicily’s first public ferry costing approximately 143 million euros, has sparked political debate regarding its size and docking locations. The vessel connects Porto Empedocle to Lampedusa and Linosa.

Opposition politicians have criticized the investment, arguing that the 140-meter ship is oversized and that smaller vessels would have been more functional for the island's infrastructure. They have raised concerns about the economic necessity and structural compatibility of the project.

In response, Sicilian Infrastructure Councilor Alessandro Aricò defended the service, asserting that operations are regular and the investment is sound. Lampedusa Mayor Filippo Mannino explained that the ship will dock at Cala Pisana until at least September 30 to manage logistics. This strategic move aims to reduce heavy vehicle traffic in the town center and prevent interference with airport operations, as the ship's height can obstruct aircraft descent corridors. The Cavallo Bianco port remains available as an alternative during bad weather.
