Sicily's Valle dei Templi showcases heritage as tuna industry drives blue economy
The Valle dei Templi archaeological park near Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves a collection of ancient Greek temples including the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Hercules and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Founded in the 6th century BC by colonists from Rhodes and Crete under the name Akragas, the site remains a major draw for visitors and a model for integrating cultural preservation with environmental projects such as the restoration of historic vineyards and orchards managed by the FAI.
In the province of Trapani, the Blue Economy Sicilia programme, co‑financed by the Sicilian Region’s Assessorate for Productive Activities, highlights the island’s tuna sector. While the traditional “mattanza” ritual and old tuna farms have ceased operation, the industry has modernised through digitalisation, sustainable practices and value‑added processing, positioning tuna fishing as a pillar of the regional blue economy.
Sicily’s broader tourism appeal combines its crystal‑clear beaches, baroque towns such as Noto, and natural reserves like the Zingaro. Highlights include Taormina’s Ancient Theatre with views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, and the coastal stretch of San Vito Lo Capo. The island’s blend of archaeological treasures, culinary traditions and evolving marine industries continues to attract domestic and international travelers throughout the summer season.
