Sidi Bou Saïd receives UNESCO World Heritage certificate

The village of Sidi Bou Saïd has officially received its UNESCO World Heritage inscription certificate. Following its unanimous inclusion in July 2026 in Busan, South Korea, the official document was presented on September 24, 2026, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Dhia Khaled, Tunisia’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, received the certificate from Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. Khaled emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to preserving its material, immaterial, natural, and geological heritage to ensure its transmission to future generations. He also noted the intention to use this heritage as a driver for cultural, economic, and social development.

This recognition marks Tunisia’s second major heritage achievement in 2026, following the inclusion of the Dahar Geopark in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in April. With the addition of Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunisia now has ten sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, consisting of nine cultural sites and one natural site.
