Sidi Bou Said added to UNESCO World Heritage List

The Tunisian village of Sidi Bou Said, renowned for its white‑blue houses overlooking the Mediterranean, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision was taken unanimously by the World Heritage Committee during its 48th session in Busan, South Korea, from 19 to 29 July 2024. The inscription brings the total number of Tunisian sites on the List to ten, nine cultural and one natural, and highlights the village’s unique blend of architecture, landscape, Sufi spirituality and artistic inspiration.

Tunisia’s Ministry of Culture and the National Heritage Institute prepared the nomination, emphasizing the site’s universal value and its role as a living cultural centre. The UNESCO listing is expected to boost high‑value cultural tourism, support local artisans and reinforce preservation efforts for the historic urban fabric of Sidi Bou Said.
