Sidmouth housing proposal faces council decision despite local objections
East Devon District Council’s Planning Committee is set to decide on an application for a large four-bedroom detached home in Sidmouth. Despite objections from Sidmouth Town Council and local residents, planning officers have recommended the proposal for approval, subject to specific conditions.
The development, located off Cotmaton Road within the East Devon National Landscape, has faced criticism regarding its scale and aesthetic. Opponents argue the building is too bulky, modern, and prominent for the area, potentially constituting overdevelopment near the Grade II-listed Peak House.
In response to initial concerns, the applicant revised the design, replacing original render and tiles with face brick, horizontal timber boarding, and a slate roof to better suit the surroundings. However, Sidmouth Town Council maintains that the angular design and massing remain unsympathetic to the local character.
