Sidney Crosby addresses NHL training changes and contract future
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is preparing for his 22nd NHL season amidst significant changes to league training protocols and discussions regarding his professional future. Under a new collective bargaining agreement, the NHL has eliminated mandatory fitness testing ahead of the 2026-27 schedule and reduced the exhibition calendar to four games per club.
Crosby, 39, noted that modern players arrive at camp in superior physical condition compared to previous generations. NHL Players’ Association officials have also suggested that extended conditioning camps are becoming less necessary as players now remain active on the ice nearly year-round.
Regarding his contract and potential retirement, Crosby stated he is leaving negotiations for his next deal to his agent, Pat Brisson, and Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas. While facing retirement speculation, Crosby indicated he will decide when to retire based on his level of play and physical health, noting that he currently feels good following a productive 2025-26 season.
