Sidney Island closure announced for Indigenous practices; South Island Medical relocates

Parks Canada has announced a seasonal closure of Sidney Island, located off the Saanich Peninsula, from October 15 to February 14. The closure is intended to allow local First Nations to reconnect with Indigenous culture and traditional practices on their ancestral lands, including hunting activities.

To ensure public safety during this period, visitor access to beaches, washrooms, and day-use areas will be prohibited. While boaters may continue to use mooring buoys and anchorage areas at their own risk, all other public access is restricted. The agency noted that the area is also a focus for ecological restoration, specifically targeting invasive fallow deer and plant species to improve the habitat for native wildlife.

In a separate development, South Island Medical has permanently closed its Freeland clinic and relocated its operations to North Island Medical in Oak Harbor. Owned by BeyondHealth, the move consolidates the two practices. While some providers have transitioned to WhidbeyHealth Primary Care in Freeland, local residents have expressed concerns regarding the lack of notice and difficulties in accessing prescription refills and new primary care services.
