Sidônio Palmeira leaves government post to join Lula reelection campaign

Sidônio Palmeira, the Minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom), is taking a leave of absence from his government post starting Monday, 12, to focus entirely on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s reelection campaign.

The move follows internal criticism within the Workers' Party (PT) regarding the effectiveness of the current communication strategy after the first-round election results. To strengthen the campaign for the second round against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the PT is implementing several changes. This includes incorporating more informal social media content, such as “selfie-style” videos, a suggestion credited to Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles that has already shown increased engagement.

Additionally, the campaign is seeking to bolster its political articulation with the help of Senator Camilo Santana. The strategic shift also involves a more aggressive communication approach, potentially involving marketer Otávio Antunes, and a focus on linking Flávio Bolsonaro’s platform to potential cuts in social programs and labor rights.
