Sidoarjo students recover from mass food poisoning

All students from the Manbaul Hikam Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, have been discharged from the hospital following a mass food poisoning incident. The Sidoarjo District Health Office confirmed that the victims' health conditions have steadily improved.

A total of 748 students and learners across 19 schools in the Kalitengah area of Tanggulangin were affected. The poisoning is suspected to have been caused by the ‘Makan Bergizi Gratis’ (Free Nutritious Meal) program menu produced by the Kalitengah Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG).

The menu served on Tuesday, September 1, included white rice, scrambled eggs, tempeh in Balinese seasoning, sautéed green beans with baby corn, and apples. Victims reported symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Similar food poisoning incidents involving the same meal program were also reported in the Nganjuk and Jombang regions last week.
