Siem Reap implements new tourism strategies amid declining arrivals
Siem Reap is implementing new strategies to combat a significant decline in tourism. Data from Angkor Enterprise shows that international arrivals to the Angkor Archaeological Park fell by 29 percent during the first eight months of 2026, with ticket revenue dropping 27.4 percent to USD 22.54 million. Nationally, the National Bank of Cambodia reported a 47.9 percent collapse in international arrivals during the first half of the year.
To address this crisis, the Cambodia Branding Forum is scheduled for 29 September 2026 in Siem Reap. Organized by Millennium Destinations and co-hosted by the Siem Reap Tourism Alliance, the forum will focus on repositioning the region through active and adventure tourism, place branding, and placemaking.
Additionally, the Cambodia Tourism Board has launched an initiative featuring pop-up cultural performances to enhance the visitor experience. Starting 18 September 2026, free bi-weekly shows will feature Kun Lbokator, an ancient martial art, and Lkhon Sbek Thom, a traditional shadow theater. These performances aim to provide immersive cultural experiences beyond temple visits.
