Siemens and Lufthansa Technik Defense plan medical evacuation train

Siemens Mobility and Lufthansa Technik Defense have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a specialized medical evacuation train. The project is intended for use by the German Bundeswehr, NATO allies, and for civil protection during large-scale disasters.

The proposed train is designed to transport over 150 patients, including those requiring intensive care, alongside up to 90 medical and support staff. To ensure operational capability during crises where power grids may be damaged, the configuration could utilize a Vectron X Dual Mode locomotive, capable of running on both electricity and diesel.

Lufthansa Technik Defense plans to equip the carriages with medical systems derived from AeroMEDICAL Solutions, which are currently used by the Luftwaffe. This standardization aims to allow patients to remain in the same medical units when transitioning between different modes of transport, such as aircraft and rail. The carriages can be reconfigured based on mission requirements, ranging from basic medical assistance to intensive care.
