Siemens battery-electric trains to modernize Leipzig S-Bahn S1 line

Sixteen new Siemens Mireo Plus B battery-electric trains will be introduced to the S1 S-Bahn line in Central Germany starting in December 2026. This transition will replace existing diesel trains on the previously non-electrified route connecting Leipzig, Grimma, and Döbeln.

The new service will integrate the Muldental region directly into the Leipzig S-Bahn network, allowing passengers to travel from Döbeln and Grimma through the Leipzig City Tunnel to Leipzig Central Station and Leipzig-Miltitzer Allee without changing trains. The trains, operated by DB Regio Südost on behalf of ZVNL and ZVMS, can accommodate up to 540 passengers in double traction and feature amenities such as WLAN, USB-C ports, and improved mobile reception.

The procurement was supported by the federal and state governments of Saxony under the Coal Region Investment Act, with the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development providing 120 million euros to ZVNL Schienenfahrzeug GmbH.
