Siemens Healthineers and Novo partner on liver disease diagnostics

Siemens Healthineers and Novo have announced a collaboration to improve the early detection and care of individuals living with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).

The partnership aims to increase disease awareness and expand access to non-invasive blood testing, specifically focusing on the Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test developed by Siemens Healthineers. In the United States, the ELF test is the first and only blood test approved for assessing the risk of progression in advanced fibrosis resulting from MASH. The test is designed to be independent of Body Mass Index (BMI) and is reimbursable through national laboratories.

MASLD affects nearly a quarter of adults in the United States and is frequently linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It has become a leading cause of liver transplants among women. Projections suggest that healthcare costs associated with these conditions could exceed $635 billion by the end of the decade. The collaboration seeks to reduce reliance on invasive procedures, such as liver biopsies, by providing earlier diagnostic opportunities.
