Siemens Mobility demonstrates fully autonomous train operations
The AutomatedTrain project has successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility of fully automated train operations (GoA4) on open railway networks. Through a collaboration involving Siemens Mobility, Deutsche Bahn, and various industry and scientific partners, a Siemens Mireo train was equipped with advanced automation systems to perform autonomous tasks.
The demonstration proved that a train can receive a command to start, conduct necessary self-tests, prepare for departure, and travel driverless from a depot to its starting station. During these runs, the train independently detects obstacles and reacts to its environment. The technology integrates autonomous control software, sensor-based environment detection, and cybersecurity protocols to manage navigation and safety.
This milestone aims to provide a foundation for the standardization of fully automated rail systems, potentially increasing operational flexibility, safety, and efficiency by reducing the need for manual intervention during deployment and stabling processes.
