Siena agricultural inspections reveal labor exploitation irregularities

Authorities in the province of Siena have conducted a targeted campaign against 'caporalato' (illegal labor exploitation) in the agricultural sector. Carabinieri inspections of nine commercial activities in municipalities including Montalcino, Sinalunga, and Sovicille revealed irregularities in four of the businesses. These violations included criminal and administrative breaches, specifically regarding the failure to adhere to mandatory health surveillance and risk assessment protocols.

Enrica Mammucari, General Secretary of UILA-UIL, condemned the ongoing exploitation in Italian fields, citing social vulnerabilities and administrative gaps. She argued that combating the practice requires more than just pursuing intermediaries; it necessitates stripping exploiters of their control over labor recruitment, transportation, housing, and the legal status of vulnerable migrant workers. Mammucari also called for improved prevention through the interoperability of public administration databases to ensure more effective and coordinated inspections.
