Siena immigration mediator arrested for illegal residence‑permit scheme

Italian police and the Siena public prosecutor uncovered a scheme in which a 27‑year‑old cultural mediator employed by the Questura’s Immigration Office used ministerial‑level credentials to falsify eligibility and obtain residence permits for foreign nationals. The mediator, originally from India and residing in the province of Frosinone, is alleged to have received large sums of money for each illicit permit. Seven other individuals – Indian and Pakistani nationals aged 27 to 53 – were also charged as intermediaries or as persons who paid for the permits.

The investigation began after immigration officers noticed anomalies in several permit applications. The Mobile Squad conducted phone interceptions, surveillance, and document seizures, which revealed a systematic process of falsifying eligibility criteria. Following the operation, the mediator was placed under house arrest and barred from re‑entering the municipality of Siena for four years. The case has been praised by the local police union and cited by the Fratelli d’Italia party in Siena as an example of strict enforcement of immigration law.
