Siena Biotecnopolo identified as strategic asset for Italian national security

Italian Health Minister Orazio Schillaci has highlighted the Biotecnopolo in Siena as a strategic asset for Italy’s national security and biomedical research. Speaking at the “Biotechnologies for National Security” conference organized by the Fondazione Biotecnopolo di Siena, Schillaci emphasized that health security is an essential component of national security.

The Minister noted that the government is committed to supporting the Siena hub to strengthen national capabilities in biotechnology and the fight against infectious diseases. He pointed to Siena’s international scientific tradition, particularly its historical contributions to vaccine development, as a foundation for future innovation.

A key objective of the initiative is to bridge the gap between scientific research, healthcare institutions, and industry to transform discoveries into practical tools for prevention and treatment. The Biotecnopolo is also fostering collaborations with entities such as the Istituto Superiore di Sanità to build a coordinated network of expertise.
