Siena hosts exhibition celebrating artist Alessandro Franchi
The city of Siena has inaugurated an exhibition titled “Alessandro Franchi. Nella Siena tra Otto e Novecento. Grazia, Etica, Fede” at Palazzo Pubblico. Promoted by the Municipality of Siena, the showcase will be open to the public until February 28, 2027, at the Magazzini del Sale and the Museo Civico.
The exhibition highlights the life and work of Alessandro Franchi (1838–1914), a significant figure in Italian painting during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although born in Prato, Franchi became a central figure in Sienese cultural life after studying under Luigi Mussini at the Academy of Siena, eventually succeeding him as director.
Franchi is recognized for his contributions to historical and sacred art, including the decoration of the Sala del Risorgimento in Palazzo Pubblico and his role in renewing the costumes for the Corteo Storico del Palio. Siena Mayor Nicoletta Fabio stated that the exhibition honors an artist who deeply interpreted the spirit of the city and enriched its artistic and cultural identity.
