Siena implements new strategic environmental and urban nature policies

Siena municipal assessor Barbara Magi has outlined the city’s strategic environmental policies, focusing on climate change, waste management, and urban greenery. The administration has joined the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (PAESC), with Professor Umberto Di Matteo tasked with developing the necessary documentation based on municipal data.

A key component of this strategy is the Urban Nature Plan, formerly known as the green plan. Developed in collaboration with a professor from Sapienza University of Rome, the project utilizes a participatory approach involving citizens, professional orders, local districts (contrade), and schools. An online questionnaire has also been launched to gauge citizen perceptions of urban greenery.

The administration aims to treat greenery as strategic infrastructure rather than mere decoration to improve quality of life. Planned projects include the creation of a seraphic garden in the Parco dell’Unità d’Italia, designed to provide health benefits for individuals with specific pathologies. Additionally, the city is moving toward energy community initiatives.
