Siena province upgrades road network: Le Chiavi tunnel reopens, Monte Amiata route work starts

The 900‑metre Le Chiavi tunnel on the SS2 Cassia, a key link between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, was fully reopened to traffic on 10 July after more than two and a half years of works. The project, carried out by ANAS with an investment of about €15 million, included concrete lining renewal, structural reinforcement, waterproofing, drainage, new lighting, fire‑safety systems and updated signage. The reopening restores unrestricted flow on the historic Cassia road, easing the heavy disruptions that had affected residents, commuters, businesses and freight operators.

A separate maintenance operation began on the SP81 near the summit of Monte Amiata on 13 July, lasting until 17 July. The extraordinary pavement works, managed with alternating one‑way traffic, aim to improve safety on the most deteriorated section of the mountain road. The initiative follows a meeting between Siena Province President Agnese Carletti, Abbadia San Salvatore Mayor Niccolò Volpini and local tourism and business representatives, and will address roughly half of the damaged stretch, with full restoration planned through 2027. Both projects are intended to reduce traffic inconvenience and support the region’s tourism and economy.
