Madrid regional government buys luxury Chamberí penthouse for Ayuso’s temporary office

The Community of Madrid, through the public company Planifica Madrid, purchased a 485‑square‑metre penthouse with a 200‑square‑metre terrace in the upscale Chamberí district. The regional executive says the property will serve as a provisional office for institutional meetings while the Real Casa de Correos undergoes rehabilitation, scheduled to start in August.

Opposition parties – Más Madrid and the PSOE – have demanded explanations, suggesting the acquisition could be for personal use by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Ayuso has rejected the allegation, describing the reporting as a “campaign of defamation” and insisting the flat is not her residence. Several ministers, including the digital transformation minister Óscar López, have publicly criticised the deal, calling it a misuse of taxpayers’ money. The purchase price has not been disclosed; media estimates place it between €5 million and €7 million. Legal questions have also arisen because the building is classified for residential use, and Madrid’s General Plan does not ordinarily permit office conversion.
