Sierra de San Miguelito hosts desert race to support territorial rights

The second edition of the ‘Carrera al Santuario del Desierto por la Sierra de San Miguelito’ is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, in Mexquitic de Carmona. Organized by local ejidatarios and the Guardianes de la Sierra de San Miguelito collective, the 10-kilometer cross-country race traverses lands within the Sierra de San Miguelito Flora and Fauna Protection Area.

Organizers noted high interest from local runners, participants from states such as Zacatecas and Mexico City, and international athletes from Kenya. Beyond the sporting aspect, the event serves as a platform for the community to assert their territorial rights and highlight their ongoing struggle against real estate encroachment and land dispossession in the region.
