Sierra Gorda forest owners receive payments for carbon sequestration

Thirty-five forest owners and ejidatarios in the Sierra Gorda region of Querétaro, specifically in Jalpan de Serra, Pinal de Amoles, and Landa de Matamoros, have received payments for the conservation of 6,932 hectares of forest.

Through the ‘Carbono Biodiverso’ project, which is part of the Emissions Compensation System, these preserved areas represent the capture of 27,144 tons of CO2 equivalent. Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SEDESU), clarified that the funds are provided by private companies from industrial zones in Querétaro, El Marqués, and San Juan del Río rather than state government resources.

The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, links industrial emissions to the preservation of forest ecosystems that absorb carbon.
