Sierra Leone advocacy group plans protest over constitutional amendments

The Citizens Advocacy Network (CAN) has formally notified the Sierra Leone Police of its intention to hold a peaceful protest and procession on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The demonstration is organized to address alleged constitutional violations regarding the ongoing process to amend the 1991 Constitution.

In a letter to Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, CAN Executive Director Thomas Moore Conteh stated the protest aims to provide citizens a platform to petition President Julius Maada Bio on matters of national importance. The procession is scheduled to begin at Lumley Beach and travel through several locations, including Stadium Car Park, Savage Street, and Siaka Stevens Street, before concluding at State House.

CAN has requested that the police arrange for crowd management, traffic control, and public safety due to the expected large turnout. The organization emphasized that the event will be orderly and non-violent, with participants expected to respect law enforcement and property.
