Sierra Leone journalists defend independence against political allegations

Journalists in Sierra Leone are defending their professional independence following accusations from members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

Journalist Dictionary Debonair addressed claims by SLPP supporters labeling him a “regime-changed journalist.” Debonair argued that disagreement with political supporters does not equate to a shift in allegiance, stating that journalists should be judged on the accuracy of their reporting and willingness to scrutinize political actors rather than whether their conclusions favor a specific party.

Separately, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has rejected allegations made by the SLPP National Publicity Secretary, Moses Sellu Mambu. Mambu reportedly accused journalists Victor Jones and Thomas Dixon of conspiring to submit a false report against him. SLAJ described these claims as unsupported by its records and expressed concern that such public accusations could undermine media reputations and expose practitioners to hostility. While Mambu later clarified that his comments regarding an agenda against the SLPP referred to media houses rather than Jones personally, he maintained the allegation regarding the false report.
