Sierra Leone lawyers challenge 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill in Supreme Court

Lawyers from the Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone have filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking judicial interpretation regarding the passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill of 2025. The legal action, brought by Thomas Moore Conteh, Esq. and Tamba Kellie, Esq., follows the government's refusal to grant corporate registration to the Society.

The applicants are asking the Court to clarify the required voting threshold and the specific voting procedures Parliament must follow for a valid constitutional amendment. While the lawyers stated they are not challenging Parliament’s legislative authority, they seek to ensure the integrity of the amendment process. If the Court determines that prescribed procedures were not met, the applicants are requesting a declaration that the bill's passage is null and void.
