Sierra Leone Ministry of Planning and Economic Development intervenes in NGO affairs

The Sierra Leone Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), via its Directorate of NGO Affairs, has taken steps to enhance oversight and resolve local disputes involving non-governmental organizations.

In Calaba Town, the Ministry intervened in a dispute regarding access to a community water well. The facility, constructed by the World Changing Center Charity Organization, had become a point of contention between residents and the charity, leading to restrictions that forced women and children to travel long distances for water. Following stakeholder engagement, the well was formally handed over to the residents to ensure regular access.

Separately, MoPED held its monthly Open Information Session to review the impact and accountability of NGOs operating within the country. The session included representatives from various government agencies, parliament, and development partners. Five organizations—Imagine Worldwide, Sightsavers, Welbodi Partnership, Welthungerhilfe, and SEND Sierra Leone—presented their programs and funding challenges. Acting Minister Rev. Dr. Jonathan Titus-Williams emphasized the need for transparency and the alignment of NGO interventions with national development priorities.
