Sierra Leone nominates Professor Charles Jalloh for ICJ election

Sierra Leone has nominated Professor Charles Chernor Jalloh as its candidate for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The announcement was made during a symposium in Freetown regarding the role of the ICJ in the peaceful settlement of disputes in Africa.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay advocated for the nomination, emphasizing that smaller nations rely heavily on international law and multilateral institutions to protect their sovereignty. Sesay noted that Africa has demonstrated a commitment to legal processes, having referred at least 37 contentious cases to the ICJ to avoid warfare. He called for deeper continental solidarity and more equitable representation for African states within global judicial institutions.

Professor Jalloh highlighted the necessity of the ICJ in an era of rising geopolitical tensions, noting that the court provides a mechanism for states to resolve disputes through binding legal judgments rather than armed conflict.
