Sierra Leone Opposition Leader demands resolution of withheld WASSCE results

Hon. Abdul Kargbo, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education to urgently resolve the withholding of 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

A total of 47,454 candidates—comprising 26,735 females and 20,719 males—have had their results withheld. Kargbo warned that the ongoing uncertainty threatens the academic futures of these students, particularly regarding their ability to secure admission to tertiary institutions.

While acknowledging the need to protect the integrity of public examinations, Kargbo emphasized that allegations of malpractice must be thoroughly investigated and that candidates should not be presumed guilty based on suspicion alone. He urged authorities to provide clear explanations, establish a definitive timeline for resolution, and coordinate with universities to ensure affected students do not lose an academic year due to investigation delays.
