Sierra Leone Paramount Chiefs demand investigation into desecration of late chief

The National Council of Paramount Chiefs of Sierra Leone (NCPC-SL) has called for a government investigation following the exhumation and desecration of the remains of the late Paramount Chief Cyril Foray Gondor II. The incident occurred in Pendembu Town, Upper Bambara Chiefdom, in the Kailahun District during the night of October 16 and the early hours of October 17, 2026.

According to the Council, the late chief’s tomb was destroyed, his remains were exhumed and paraded through the town, and his coffin was set on fire. Additionally, five houses belonging to the late chief, his wife, and close family members were reportedly vandalized and looted. Graphic images and videos of the incident were subsequently circulated on social media.

The NCPC-SL, which represents chiefs from all 190 chiefdoms in the country, has made several demands, including the formation of an investigative committee with Council representation, strengthened police investigations, and expedited judicial trials for those responsible. The Council also requested government security support for the bereaved family to ensure traditional rites can be completed peacefully.
