Sierra Leone peace officials complete environmental conflict training in China

Three officials from Sierra Leone’s Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) have completed a three-week specialized training program in China. The Environmental Emergency Response and Peace Seminar, held from August 7 to August 27, 2026, was organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.

The program focused on the intersection of environmental challenges and peace, specifically examining how disputes over land, livelihoods, and natural resources can trigger community tensions. Participants studied natural resource management and methods for identifying, reporting, and addressing environmental concerns to prevent them from escalating into serious conflicts.

The ICPNC delegation included Deputy Executive Secretary Moses Margao, Deputy Director of Conflict Prevention Simeonette Uwanie Pontis, and Senior Conflict Prevention and Mediation Officer Francis Patterson. The training aims to enhance the commission’s capacity for early warning, mediation, and maintaining national cohesion through effective environmental emergency responses.
