Sierra Leone Supreme Court resumes constitutional amendment hearing

The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone has resumed hearings regarding the controversial Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2025. A five-man panel, led by Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, is reviewing three consolidated cases filed against the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

The legal dispute centers on whether Parliament followed the constitutionally required procedures during the passage of the Bill on August 10, 2026. The proceedings have caused the Judiciary to suspend all High Court sittings at the Main Law Court Building in Freetown to accommodate the constitutional matter.

In response to the ongoing litigation, Alphonso Gbanie has called for increased public education regarding the case. He urged political parties to avoid politicizing the judiciary and suggested that the national debate should focus on which electoral models—such as proportional representation or first-past-the-post—best serve the country rather than partisan disputes.
