Sierra Nevada Graziers recalls raw milk cheese amid E. coli outbreak

A multi-state E. coli outbreak has been linked to Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw milk cheeses, resulting in 13 reported illnesses across nine to ten states. The affected states include California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Michigan.

According to the CDC and FDA, eight people have been hospitalized, and three have developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a severe condition that can lead to kidney failure. More than half of the infected individuals are children aged five or younger. The average age of those affected is five.

The FDA has issued a recall for four varieties of Sierra Nevada Graziers cheese: medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeno jack, and Monterey jack. These products were sold in 8-ounce and 16-ounce retail packages, as well as 5-pound loaves for wholesalers and food service providers.

Because raw milk cheese has a long shelf life, health officials are urging consumers to check refrigerators and freezers for the recalled products. Consumers are advised to discard any remaining cheese and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the product.
