Siete Mezquites landfill remains closed due to lack of permits

The Siete Mezquites landfill project, located on the border of Tula de Allende and Tezontepec de Aldama, will remain closed indefinitely. The Hidalgo Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNATH) has maintained a suspension on works at the site, preventing both construction and the reception of urban solid waste.

Authorities clarified that the project is a private initiative intended to address waste saturation in Tula de Allende, rather than a government-led project. While the project exists, SEMARNATH has not issued the necessary permits for it to begin operations. The decision to maintain the suspension follows citizen complaints regarding garbage trucks reportedly depositing waste at the site illegally.

Local residents in Tezontepec de Aldama have expressed concerns regarding potential impacts on regional aquifers. SEMARNATH stated it will continue supervising the project and has provided environmental impact assessment data to the Hidalgo Congress. The agency warned that any attempt to operate the facility without proper authorization will result in sanctions against the involved parties.
