Sieteiglesias medieval necropolis declared Cultural Interest Asset
The Community of Madrid has officially declared the medieval necropolis of Sieteiglesias a ‘Bien de Interés Cultural’ (BIC) under the category of Archaeological Zone. Located in the urban center of Sieteiglesias within the Sierra Norte region, the site dates back to between the 9th and 11th centuries.
The necropolis consists of 85 graves situated both around and beneath the Church of San Pedro Apóstol. Excavations began in 2001, following long-standing knowledge of the site's existence. The burials are divided into three zones—north, east, and southeast—and include two distinct types of graves: simple rock-cut pits closed with stone slabs and cist graves made of vertical stone slabs.
Archaeological findings at the site include coins, medals, ceramics, glazed pottery, porcelain, and Talavera-style pieces. Research indicates a primary period of use from the 9th to the 11th centuries, which may have lasted until the 15th century, with a secondary period of reuse in the 17th century. The site is being prepared for accessibility and museum integration as part of the Community of Madrid's Plan de Yacimientos Visitables.
