The prosecutor, Panagiotis Iliopoulos, has requested the conviction of two fishermen for premeditated manslaughter by joint action in the death of former minister Sifis Valyrakis. The incident occurred on January 24, 2021, in the maritime area of Eretria.

According to the prosecution, the defendants engaged in a dispute with Valyrakis, performed dangerous maneuvers with their vessel, and one of the defendants struck Valyrakis at least two or three times with a wooden pole. This caused Valyrakis to fall into the sea. Forensic evidence identified 15 injuries to his head and neck, including fatal wounds consistent with contact with boat propellers and hydrofoils. The prosecutor also noted that Valyrakis was not wearing diving weights and still had sandals on at the time of the fall.

The prosecution further alleged that the defendants abandoned Valyrakis without notifying the authorities. The defense has strongly contested the proposal, calling it subjective and lacking legal basis, maintaining that the defendants deny the charges and that video evidence supports their alibi.
