Sifis Valyrakis family appeals acquittal of fishermen

The family of former PASOK minister Sifis Valyrakis is appealing the acquittal of two fishermen by the Mixed Jury Court of Athens. Legal representative Zoi Konstantopoulou announced that a formal request for an appeal will be submitted to the Athens Prosecutor of Appeals on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Konstantopoulou stated that the legal team maintains the conviction that the defendants are guilty, a position supported by the presiding prosecutor's minority opinion. The defense argues that the acquittal is inconsistent with the extensive evidence presented during the year-long trial.

Additionally, the legal team criticized the Union of Greek Prosecutors for an announcement made on October 9, 2026. Konstantopoulou characterized the union's statement as an “unacceptable intervention” that attempts to prevent the exercise of an appeal and reframe the case.
