Sifnos helicopter crash investigation points to mechanical failure

Authorities are investigating the fatal crash of a Bell 206 helicopter on the island of Sifnos, which resulted in three deaths. Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest a mechanical failure, specifically a loss of thrust in the tail rotor. Visual evidence from the crash shows the helicopter spinning uncontrollably in the opposite direction of the rotor before impact.

Specialized forensic teams and experts from the Hellenic Police are examining wreckage collected near the crash site, which is located approximately 50 meters from the local helipad. Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage from Markopoulo, the takeoff point, to examine the pilot's pre-flight preparations and the helicopter's condition.

Key areas of the inquiry include the helicopter's maintenance records, company certifications, the flight plan, and radio communications. While a post-mortem examination of the pilot is planned to rule out sudden health issues, current evidence suggests the pilot remained conscious and attempted to maintain control until the moment of impact. Following the incident, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority issued an emergency directive regarding Bell 206 type helicopters.
