LaLiga to implement connected ball technology for all matches
LaLiga will become the first professional football league to implement connected ball technology across all matches starting in the 2026/27 season. Developed in partnership with Puma and Kinexon, the system features a radio-frequency sensor integrated into the official match ball to transmit real-time data regarding the ball's position and the exact moment of contact.
This technology is designed to support the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) by providing high-precision data to resolve complex decisions. Key applications include determining millimetric offsides, identifying handballs, detecting deflections, and clarifying double-touch situations. The sensor transmits up to 560 signals per second, which are captured by approximately twelve antennas installed in each stadium to triangulate the ball's position.
In addition to officiating support, the rollout includes the launch of xBALL, a new official data layer. This will provide broadcast partners and viewers with advanced statistics, such as shot speed, spin, and trajectory. Testing has indicated that the inclusion of the sensor does not alter the ball's weight, balance, or overall performance for the players.
