Sighignola mountain search for missing hiker expands to Switzerland

A large-scale search operation is underway in the Italian-Swiss border region near Mount Sighignola for a missing 62-year-old Spanish woman. The woman, a resident of the Como province, lost contact with her husband in the rugged terrain near Bosco Meriggio after becoming lost.

Rescue efforts are facing significant challenges because the woman’s mobile phone was in her husband’s backpack, making digital tracking impossible. Search teams, including mountain rescue, fire departments, Carabinieri, and specialized dog units, are conducting manual searches across the vast area, though finding tracks has proven difficult. A witness reported seeing the couple hiking together on Sunday morning before hearing the husband call out for his wife without receiving a response.

Following unsuccessful efforts on the Italian side, the search is being expanded to the Ticino side of the mountain massif in Switzerland.
