Sign Language Day initiatives launched in Akashi and via TBS Radio
To commemorate the International Day of Sign Languages and Sign Language Day on September 23, various events and initiatives are being held to promote the understanding of sign language as an equal language to spoken language and to protect the rights of the deaf.
In Akashi City, Japan, several community events are scheduled for September 23, 2026. These include sign language experience and exchange sessions at With Akashi, as well as sign language storytelling and astronomical presentations at the Akashi City Library. Additionally, the Akashi City Astronomical Museum will be illuminated in blue from sunset until 21:00 to raise awareness.
In the media sector, TBS Radio is launching a limited-time experimental project for its program ‘Konbanwa, Yoshinaga Sayuri desu’. From September 23 to September 30, the station will provide special video broadcasts featuring sign language alongside the audio to improve accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
