Sign language identified as key to inclusive education and accessibility

Experts and advocates are emphasizing the importance of sign language to improve accessibility and inclusion for the Deaf community. At the 2026 Sign Language Awareness Conference in Onitsha, Nigeria, organizers highlighted sign language as a vital tool for equitable education. Speakers noted that proficiency in sign language helps teachers understand students and allows parents to communicate more effectively with their children. Discussions also touched on the potential of using Artificial Intelligence to enhance educational resources for Deaf learners.

In observance of Deaf Awareness Month in September, discussions have also focused on the systemic challenges faced by the Deaf community, particularly regarding healthcare and public services. Barriers include difficulties in securing in-person or video remote interpreters, which can impede critical communication in medical settings. The diversity of sign languages globally, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL), further underscores the need for specialized linguistic awareness and cultural understanding.
