Signal expands multi-device support to Android tablets and smartphones

Signal has expanded its multi-device support, allowing users to link Android tablets, additional Android smartphones, and additional iPhones to an existing account. Previously, linking was limited to computers and iPads.

Android tablets can be used either as linked secondary devices or registered as independent devices using their own phone numbers. For linked devices, Signal maintains end-to-end encryption for all messages and media. During setup, users can transfer their message history and media from the previous 45 days to the new device.

To improve usability on Android tablets, Signal has introduced an optimized split-screen interface that displays the conversation list alongside the active chat. These updates are available in Signal for Android version 8.20 and Signal for iOS version 8.22.
