Kimberley, B.C. on citywide evacuation alert amid wildfires
The entire city of Kimberley in southeastern British Columbia has been placed on a citywide evacuation alert after the Matthew Creek wildfire and two Tower Creek fires ignited west of the municipality. The Matthew Creek fire has surpassed 500 hectares since July 18, while the Tower Creek fires are burning in steep, inaccessible terrain. The BC Wildfire Service has mobilized crews, aerial resources and is establishing control lines and natural barriers to contain the blazes. City Fire Chief Will Booth warned, “Given the current and forecasted conditions on both fires, particularly with ongoing hot, dry weather and little to no rain, the BC Wildfire Service has made the recommendation that Evacuation Alerts be issued.” More than 8,000 residents have been urged to stay informed, register for the Regional Evacuation Notification System and verify their location pins on the system to receive timely alerts.
